How to Wake Up The Kids

We get it, nobody likes early mornings, especially not the kids, and especially not when they have to wake up early to go to school. While many schools are still teaching remotely, that’s not the case for everywhere, and everyone will eventually have to get ready to go back. With that in mind, the team at Readgrad thought we’d offer these suggestions for getting the kids to get up.

Bribe them. It may not be the strategy you’d like to start with, but trust us, it’s effective. Do your kids have a favorite breakfast? Have it ready for them if they’ll get up. Maybe a chocolate or some candy later? Why not! Food can be a great motivator but your imagination is the limit.

Wake them up earlier than needed. After all, even we hit snooze on the alarm once or twice, or seven times… Kids are no different, and when they ask for five more minutes in bed they have every right to it. So if you’re up already, wake the kids up earlier than they need to and let them go back to bed for a few more minutes, it’ll seem like an indulgence!

Make sure they’re getting enough sleep. Perhaps most importantly, if the day ahead calls for an early start time, make sure the kids get to bed early the night before. They may not like it, well rested kids will make your life so much easier in the morning!

Story Stones: Fun for the Whole Family

It’s no secret, the pandemic has presented a whole lot of challenges for families. With some kids in school, some kids out of school, all while some parents are still heading into the office while others are working from home, it’s brought a whole new level of complexity to childcare, especially when it comes to keeping the kids entertained! With that in mind, the team here at Readgrad thought we'd suggest a fun way to keep the kids entertained, and activity that parents might love too; story stones!

Don’t worry if you’ve never heard about story stones, we’re happy to tell you all about them. For starters, the activity starts with something the kids may already love doing, hunting for rocks! Rock hunting is a fun activity for kid and adult alike, and it’s a great way to get outside when many places might be closed. Bundle up since the cold is coming, get outside, and find the most interesting rocks around!

And of course, the fun doesn’t have to stop once you get home! Give the rocks a quick rinse and once they’re dry, it’s time to break out the paint! With each painted rock make up a little story with the kids, perhaps make them characters in a play or paint the story of where they were found, the only limit is your imagination!

The Best Books For Your Slightly Older Young Readers

Kids grow up fast, and as parents sometimes we can struggle with the reality of all the things they outgrow. When your young one has made it to grade school and has outgrown their classic children’s books, here are a few more classics that will be a bit more age appropriate.

Matilda by Roald Dahl. While Dahl has a number of timeless classics in his catalogue, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, Matilda is perhaps the best starting point for young readers. The only one of Dahl’s books to make it to the New York Public Library‘s list of the best children’s books, Matilda tells the tale of a smart and precocious young girl who uses her wits to outsmart the often cruel grown-ups around her.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Now enjoying a whole new level of success thanks to Disney’s recent adaptation, A Wrinkle in Time has long been a classic, and serves as a fantastic introduction to science fiction and fantasy for younger readers. The winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of a girl tasked with traveling through space and time to save her scientist father—and the world.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling. What list of classic books for young readers would be complete without Harry Potter? Nothing short of a cultural phenomenon, J. K. Rowling’s story of a young Wizard discovering who he truly is continues to be enjoyed by readers of all ages, and likely will be for many decades to come.

Quirky Kids Books the Whole Family Will Love

There’s certainly no shortage of great books for kids and their big kid parents, but if you’re looking for something new to read that everyone will love, consider these two quirky books, they may just become the new family favorites.

Spencer’s New Pet by Jessie Sima. You may know Jessie Sima for her fantastic book Not Quite Narwhal, and we’re sure you’ll be every bit as delighted with Spencer’s New Pet. It’s an adorable story accompanied by some adorable mostly black-and-white illustrations that give this modern tale an old-fashioned feel. The story centers around a boy who must avoid sharp objects in order to protect his balloon-animal pet dog, and we have a feeling it may just become one of your favorites after reading it to your kids.

It’s Only Stanley by Jon Agee. Award winning children’s author Jon Agee offers up another great tale with It’s Only Stanley, the story of Stanley, a family dog who does fantastic things. The Wimbeldons, Stanley’s family, suspect the noises he’s making are the result of him cleaning or fixing something, but little do they suspect that Stanley is actually transforming their house into a rocket ship that will carry them to an alien-inhabited planet. It’s a rhyming read-aloud book that’s good fun for the whole family.

How to Create Meaningful Family Moments

Bonding is an important element to creating a happy family, and while those bonding moments can’t always be forced, here are four ways to help create meaningful family moments and strengthen bonds.

Get the kids involved. Creating activities for the kids is all well and good, but getting them involved in every step of the process, including the planning, is a great way to cement family ties and develop strong bonds. The kids may even surprise you and come up with better ideas than your own!

Family interviews. Odds are our parents have lived interesting lives and have many interesting stories to tell. Have the kids conduct “family interviews” and ask questions, not only will they love the stories and get to know their grandparents, but you may even learn a few things you never knew.

Plant a family garden. It takes a lot of love and nurturing to make a garden grow, much like it does to make a family strong. Gardening with the kids is a great way to share that labour of love, and growing food in that garden will go a long way to helping kids understand the value of that work.

Cook together as a family. Feeding a family is a lot of work, but cooking can be a lot of fun when the whole family is involved, and the kids can even get pretty creative when it comes to culinary concoctions.

Getting Competitive With the Kids!

Quiet nights at home are a staple of quality family time. It could be an evening curled up together on the couch watching a movie, or maybe some family reading time. But sometimes it can be a whole lot of fun to get a little competitive too, and quick little contests with the kids are a surefire way to get everyone smiling and giggling. Here are three fun competitions you can have with the kids.

Scavenger hunts. No matter what the occasion, a scavenger hunt is sure to be fun for everyone! Clues can be placed throughout the house, or even throughout the neighborhood if you’re willing to venture outside, and a fun prize is just the icing on the cake!

Paper airplane contests. We all played with paper airplanes in school at one point or another, so why not bring that same level of fun into the home! Everyone can build their own paper airplane and compete for speed, distance, accuracy, or even artistic style!

Cleanup contests. The kids won’t mind cleaning up if it can get a little competitive. Set goals for getting a part of the house the cleanest, or cleaning it up the fastest, and be sure to have some prizes handy. Not only will it be fun for the kids, but it’ll take a load off the chores for the grown ups!

Ways to Relax as a Family

When life gets to be a bit on the stressful side, some relaxation is in order! Here are four activities you can take part in to help relax with the whole family.

A night of stargazing. What better way to relax with the family than to get outside with the telescope on a clear night and marvel at the wonders of the universe! Make sure to have a map of the cosmos at hand to know just what you’re looking at.

A nature walk. When city life gets to stressful why not head out into nature for the day? A nice long walk through some trees or even a field of flowers is sure to be relaxing for boths the kids and the grown ups.

Read together. Pick out a book the whole family can enjoy and take turns reading out loud to each other, or if the kids are too young they can follow along as mommy and daddy read. Getting the kids involved in reading at an early age is a great way to make them lifelong readers too!

Cook together. Find a nice simple recipe the kids can help with and get them involved in the kitchen! Anything complicated can be prepped in advance to ensure smooth sailing as soon as the kids get involved.

Fascinating Facts for the Whole Family

The world is a fascinating place, and the wonders of nature can mesmerize us all! Here are three interesting facts that are sure to fascinate the whole family.

Defend the fort! Bees aren’t usually known to go on the offensive, and generally speaking they will only sting if they’re feeling threatened, honey bees in particular. Not so when it comes to protecting the hive, however! Bees will not only swarm any perceived threat to their hive, regardless of size or species of the intruder, they’ll even sting other bees if they’re perceived to be a threat.

It’s raining fish! Tornadoes can form over water just as they do over land, and when they do, they can suck up large amounts of lake and sea water including whatever may be swimming in that water at the time. The law of gravity dictates that what goes up must come down, and so when the wind decreases and the tornado subsides a downpour of fish is entirely possible.

Dinosaurs roamed the earth. Despite the fact that bones and fossils have only been found in certain areas of the globe, scientific evidence suggests that dinosaurs may have lived on every continent, including Antarctica. The lack of fossilized remains is likely due to soil and weather conditions that were unfavorable to the survival of remains, or bones just being too small to fossilize.

Winter Comfort Foods for the Family

Oh the weather outside is frightful! Yes, winter weather is here, and we can’t help but feel chilled to the bone on some of the worst days. Warming by the fire is certainly one way to heat things up, but some great comfort food can work wonders as well! Here are three comfort food classics that are sure to warm up the whole family this winter.

Grilled cheese. Oh yes, the classics are still the best! There’s nothing quite like a grilled cheese sandwich on a cold winter day. Feeling adventurous? Why not add a little extra on the inside? Apple, bacon, or tomatoes make great additions to a grilled cheese sandwich. Don’t forget to butter both sides of the bread for that delicious golden crunch.

Soup. An excellent way to warm the body and the soul, a hot steaming bowl of soup is the perfect fit on a blustery winter day. It can be anything from chicken noodle to a cream of broccoli with some cheese sprinkled in. To top it all off, tomato soup makes the perfect accompaniment to that grilled cheese sandwich.

Mac and cheese. Another traditional dish that’s hard to beat on a cold winter day! It doesn’t have to come from a box to be easy to make, and there’s no doubt it’ll be sure to please the whole family! Some purists insist it must be served straight up, but there’s nothing stopping you from adding a bit of steamed broccoli as a healthy extra.
